This was the one that started it all. Christmas 2007, a Delta flight from Boston, landing in Amsterdam on the 26th at 7:30 in the morning. My first time leaving the country.
I don’t remember every detail, but I remember the feeling — walking out of Schiphol into cold Dutch air and realizing that the world was significantly larger than the South Shore of Massachusetts. The canals, the bikes, the brown cafes, the museums. Everything was different and everything was interesting.
I came home with 38 photos on a camera that didn’t have GPS and a certainty that I needed to do this again as soon as possible. Nearly twenty years and 75 countries later, I’m still chasing that same feeling.
