Four days in Reykjavik and the Golden Circle. WOW Air from Boston to Keflavik, the CenterHotel Plaza downtown. This was the trip that made Iceland one of my most-visited countries.
Thingvellir National Park was beautiful, but Silfra was the main event — snorkeling between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in water so clear you could see 100 meters. The water was near-freezing and I was in a dry suit, but floating between two continents was worth every second of cold.
My first helicopter ride, taking off from the Reykjavik domestic airport over the city and the surrounding lava fields. The Leidarendi lava cave — walking through a tunnel formed by ancient volcanic flow. And yes, I visited the Icelandic Phallological Museum, because it exists and I was curious.
Iceland in March is dark and cold and magnetic. I’d come back four more times.
